Benazir ("peerless") is a 1964 Muslim social, a genre popular in the early 1960s after Chaudhvin Ka Chand, set in the refined world of old Lucknow families. Meena Kumari plays Benazir, a dancer whose life is entwined with an aristocratic family, with Ashok Kumar, Shashi Kapoor and Tanuja in the main roles. The film was produced by Bimal Roy, the director of Do Bigha Zamin and Bandini, and its music is by S. D. Burman, with songs that show his lighter, ghazal-tinged side. For Meena Kumari's admirers it is one of the dramas from the years when she was Hindi cinema's queen of tragedy.
