Bhagavathi runs a small tea stall in Chennai and has raised his younger brother Guna with all the love of a parent. Guna falls in love with the daughter of a powerful, ruthless man, and Bhagavathi stands by him, but the romance provokes the girl's family into violence that changes everything. Grief-stricken, the mild tea-shop owner turns into a fearsome figure of the underworld to take on the man responsible. Bhagavathi was one of the films that established Vijay's action-hero image after a string of romantic roles, and it introduced Jai, who later starred in Chennai 600028 and Subramaniapuram, as Guna. Reema Sen plays the female lead and Deva composed the music.
