Bhoothnath (2008)

When young Banku and his parents move into Nath Villa, a grand old house in Goa, the locals warn them it is haunted. The ghost is real: Kailash Nath, the stern old owner, who has spent years chasing tenants away. But Banku is not afraid, and the boy and the ghost, whom he names Bhoothnath, become the best of friends, while Banku slowly learns the sad story of why Kailash Nath cannot leave the house. Amitabh Bachchan clearly enjoys himself as the cantankerous spirit, and Shah Rukh Khan appears in an extended role as Banku's father. The film draws loosely on Oscar Wilde's The Canterville Ghost and was made for a family audience, with spooky moments kept light. Its success led to a sequel, Bhoothnath Returns (2014).
