Billa is the ruthless boss of a crime empire based in Malaysia, hunted for years by the police officer Jayaprakash. When Billa is fatally wounded during a chase, Jayaprakash secretly recruits Velu, a petty thief who is the gangster's exact double, to take his place and expose the network from inside. Velu learns to walk, talk and kill like Billa, but once inside he finds that the people around him, from a vengeful woman to the officers themselves, are not what they seem. Billa is a slick remake of the 1980 Rajinikanth hit of the same name, itself a remake of Amitabh Bachchan's Don. Ajith Kumar's stylish turn, Nirav Shah's glossy Malaysian locations and Yuvan Shankar Raja's score made it one of the defining Tamil action films of the 2000s, and it led to the prequel Billa II.
