Raja has grown up in the forest with his mother, cut off from the family wealth she left behind. When he comes into the world outside, he clashes with Rajeswari, a proud and domineering woman of property, and falls in love with her daughter Rani, setting off a battle of wills between the young man and his formidable future mother-in-law, while a family secret from the past waits to be uncovered. Directed by B. Gopal and produced by Suresh Productions, the film was a major hit and launched Divya Bharti, in her first Telugu success, as a star before she moved to Hindi films. Ilaiyaraaja's songs were very popular, and Vanisri's imperious turn became a template for such roles. It is known in Hindi as Rampur Ka Raja.
