Pat is a fading Hollywood B-movie actor who, with no better offers, accepts a part in an Indian film. He arrives to find a production run on passion, superstition and improvisation: scripts written overnight, stars who turn up when they feel like it, song sequences that make no sense to him, and Subbu, a producer-director who is endlessly harassed and endlessly optimistic. As Pat is drawn into the madness, he starts to see what he has lost in his own career. Nagesh Kukunoor, who began the Indian English-language indie wave with Hyderabad Blues, made this affectionate satire of the Hindi film industry largely in English, and Om Puri's performance as Subbu is its comic centre.
