Johnny Balraj arrives in Bombay as a refugee child after Partition and grows up a hungry, reckless street fighter who wants to be a big shot. His chance comes through Kaizad Khambatta, a smooth media baron who makes him the front man of a glamorous jazz club, Bombay Velvet, while using him for his own schemes in the race to reclaim land from the sea. Johnny falls hard for Rosie, a jazz singer with secrets of her own, and the two are drawn into a world of newspapers, politicians and gangsters. Anurag Kashyap's lavish period film was inspired by historian Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables and recreated the city of the 1960s in detail, with a jazz-infused score by Amit Trivedi. Karan Johar played his first major acting role as the villain. The film was a box-office disaster but has since found admirers for its look and music.
