In 1950s Kenya, game warden George Adamson is forced to shoot a lioness that has attacked people, and brings her three orphaned cubs home to his wife Joy. Two go to a zoo, but the smallest, Elsa, stays and grows up as part of the family. When she becomes too big and too wild for life among people, Joy refuses to send her to a cage, and the couple set out to teach a lion raised by humans how to hunt and survive on her own. Based on Joy Adamson's best-selling memoir, the film was shot on location in Kenya with real lions. John Barry won Oscars for the score and, with lyricist Don Black, for the title song. Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers went on to found the Born Free Foundation for wildlife protection.
