Bose: Dead/Alive (2017)

The series follows Subhas Chandra Bose from his house arrest in Calcutta and daring escape across Afghanistan to Germany, through his attempts to win allies for India's freedom and his leadership of the Indian National Army in South-East Asia. Running alongside is the question that has fascinated India for decades: did Netaji really die in a plane crash in Taiwan in August 1945, or did he survive? The show is based on journalist Anuj Dhar's book India's Biggest Cover-Up, which argues the official account does not hold. Rajkummar Rao gained weight and shaved his hairline to transform into Bose, and his performance was the series' most praised element. It was one of the early big-ticket Hindi web series.
