Description

One day of a Chaturmas 2022 reading of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, delivered in Hindi at Govardhan Maṭha, Purī — the eastern of the four cardinal maṭhas of the Śaṅkarācārya tradition. A second run through the text, two years after the 2020 series and dated day by day in the source. The Upaniṣad belongs to the Śukla Yajur Veda, and its six adhyāyas move from the sacrificial horse as an image of the whole to Yājñavalkya's argument that the self is the one thing not known as an object. Cāturmāsya is the four-month monsoon retreat during which a saṃnyāsin stays in one place, and at a maṭha it is the season when the ācārya teaches daily. Day 19 of the series, recorded 8 August 2022.
