Sarfarosh (1999)

Ajay Singh Rathod gave up a medical career to join the police after criminals attacked his family. Now an Assistant Commissioner in Mumbai's crime branch, he begins pulling at the threads of an arms-smuggling racket that is supplying weapons to terrorists, and the trail leads to the border villages of Rajasthan. Along the way he must win the trust of his prickly colleague Inspector Salim and keep finding time for Seema, the woman he loves, while a celebrated ghazal singer, Gulfam Hassan, seems to be more than he appears. John Matthew Matthan's tightly plotted thriller was praised for its realism and is one of the best Hindi cop films of the 1990s. It won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film, and Jagjit Singh's ghazal "Hoshwalon Ko Khabar Kya" is a classic.
