Pugazhendhi is a news cameraman turned interviewer who lands a live interview with the Chief Minister, Aranganathan, and asks him uncomfortable questions about riots and corruption. Stung, the Chief Minister challenges him to do the job himself for one day. Pugazhendhi accepts, and in twenty-four hours suspends corrupt officials, clears files and wins over the public, making a dangerous enemy of the man he replaced and getting pulled into politics for good, while his romance with the village girl Thenmozhi runs into her father's objections. Mudhalvan ("Chief Minister") is one of Shankar's best-known vigilante fantasies and a landmark of late-1990s Tamil cinema, with Raghuvaran memorable as the cunning politician. A. R. Rahman's songs, including "Shakalaka Baby" and "Kurukku Siruthavale", were huge hits. Shankar remade it in Hindi as Nayak (2001) with Anil Kapoor.
