Kashinath is a hot-headed wrestler from Benaras who travels to Bombay with his father Shambhunath, an old freedom fighter in need of treatment. They stay in a crowded locality terrorised by Katya and his brothers, a gang of thugs whom no one dares to oppose. Kashi's anger keeps rising as he watches the residents being crushed, while his father, ill but unbowed, urges him to find the courage that would make the whole street stand up. Ghatak was the third collaboration of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi after Ghayal and Damini. Danny Denzongpa's towering Katya is among his best-known villains, and the film's lively Benaras flavour and father-son scenes with Amrish Puri lift it above routine action.
