Jaan Tere Naam ("my life in your name") is a college romance in the mould of the young-love hits that followed Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Maine Pyar Kiya. A boy of modest means and a rich girl meet at college, fall for each other and must fight her family's opposition, with music carrying much of the emotion. It introduced Ronit Roy, who decades later found a second career as a celebrated character actor and television star, and Farheen in her Hindi debut. Nadeem–Shravan, then the hottest composers in Hindi cinema, wrote the songs, and the soundtrack was a major part of the film's success with young audiences.
