Krampus (2015)

Max dreads Christmas: his visiting relatives are loud and spiteful, and after they mock his letter to Santa he tears it up and wishes the holiday away. That night a blizzard cuts off the neighbourhood, the power fails, and his German grandmother Omi recognises the signs of Krampus, the ancient Alpine demon who punishes those who have abandoned the spirit of the season. Soon the family must band together against killer toys, monstrous gingerbread men and a horned figure on the rooftops. Michael Dougherty, who made the Halloween anthology Trick 'r Treat, blends horror and black comedy, and many of the creatures were built as practical puppets and effects by Weta Workshop. Toni Collette and Adam Scott lead a strong ensemble, and the film became a modern favourite among alternative Christmas movies.
