Rahul Udyavar joins a well-loved Mumbai school as English and music teacher and soon becomes the favourite of the students. The school is run by a gentle, principled principal, but new trustees have taken over and see it as a money-making enterprise: they raise fees, push the children into television reality shows and advertising, and squeeze the teachers. As the pressure on the children grows, Rahul has to decide whether to keep quiet or stand up for them. Paathshaala is a well-meant social drama about the commercialisation of schools and the stress put on children. Shahid Kapoor plays the young idealist teacher, and Nana Patekar brings quiet dignity to the role of the principal caught between his loyalty to the school and his conscience.
