Bapji rules his town with fear: politicians, police and ordinary people all bow to him, and his muscle is Narsimha, a tough young man he raised and who carries out his orders without question. But Narsimha's encounters with people Bapji has crushed, and with the women in his life, make him see the cruelty he has been serving, and his turn against his master sets off a violent struggle for the town. N. Chandra, who made Ankush and Tezaab, gives the film a gritty feel, and Om Puri's chilling Bapji is one of Hindi cinema's memorable villains. It was also the first film in which Urmila Matondkar, earlier a child actor, played an adult lead.
