Farhad Pastakia is a gentle, middle-aged Parsi who still lives with his mother and grandmother in Mumbai and sells women's lingerie for a living. His mother is determined to find him a bride, but all his matches fail until he meets Shirin Foladkar, a spirited Parsi woman who works for a community trust. She is perfect for him, except that her past dealings are tied to the one thing his mother cannot forgive. The film is a warm, comic portrait of Mumbai's Parsi community, with its housing colonies, quirks and unmistakable Gujarati-Parsi idiom. It was choreographer and director Farah Khan's first lead role as an actor, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and directed by his sister Bela, an editor making her directing debut.
