Meera (1992)

Meera is the directorial debut of P. C. Sreeram, the celebrated cinematographer behind Mouna Ragam, Nayakan and Geethanjali. Vikram, then still years away from stardom, plays a hot-headed young man who becomes the protector and travelling companion of Meera, played by Aishwarya, as the two flee from people who want to harm them. Their journey across the countryside is full of quarrels and small adventures, and the mutual dislike slowly turns into affection. As expected from Sreeram, the film is visually striking, and Ilaiyaraaja's soundtrack is the other main reason to watch it; its songs are still remembered by fans of the composer. Meera was not a commercial success on release, but it has since gained interest as an early Vikram film and a rare Sreeram directorial work.
