Description

Jim, an Australian airman, parachutes into the rainforest after his plane is shot down during the Japanese invasion of Singapore in 1942. Alone, injured and surrounded by enemy patrols, he meets Seng, a Chinese resistance fighter, and the two men, who share no common language, must rely on each other to get through the jungle alive. Canopy, written and directed by Aaron Wilson as his feature debut, is an almost wordless war film: it tells its story through sound, glances and the noise of the forest rather than through dialogue or big battle scenes. That makes it an unusual, intimate survival drama, closer to an art film than a war spectacle. It drew good notices on the festival circuit for its immersive sound design and minimalist approach.
