Ram Avtar is a simple man from a poor background who is picked by powerful politicians as a harmless puppet candidate for an election, on the assumption that he will do as he is told. Once elected as an MLA, he learns the tricks of the trade quickly, and the film follows his transformation as power changes him, with Shabana Azmi and Shatrughan Sinha in key roles. This political satire was directed by Dasari Narayana Rao, who adapted his own Telugu hit MLA Yedukondalu, and it was one of several Hindi films Rajesh Khanna made with him in the early 1980s. Its sharp look at Indian electoral politics is its main draw.
