Chandni Chowk (1954)

Chandni Chowk is a 1954 Hindi social drama directed by B. R. Chopra, one of his early films as a director, made before he founded B. R. Films and had his big hits with Naya Daur and Kanoon. Named after the famous market of old Delhi, it stars Meena Kumari, then rising to become Hindi cinema's great tragedienne, with Shekhar as the hero and Jeevan in a villainous part. The story deals with love, family ties and the pressures of tradition in a traditional Muslim household of old Delhi. It is of interest as early work by both Chopra and Meena Kumari.
