Senthil and his wife Ganga move into a grand old palace that the locals say is cursed: long ago a king imprisoned the court dancer Chandramukhi there and killed the man she loved. Soon strange things begin to happen, and the family, divided by old quarrels, suspects one another. Senthil's friend Saravanan, a psychiatrist with a cheerful manner and a sharp mind, comes to stay and quietly begins to investigate. This Tamil horror comedy is a remake of the Malayalam classic Manichitrathazhu, by way of P. Vasu's own Kannada version Apthamitra. It was a huge comeback hit for Rajinikanth and ran for well over two years in a Chennai theatre. Jyothika's performance, especially in the climactic dance "Raa Raa", is the film's highlight, and Vadivelu provides much of the comedy.
