Kirill is a talented young video-game designer in Moscow. One day his life begins to disappear: his flat belongs to a stranger, his friends do not recognise him, and his documents no longer exist. He has been chosen to become a "functional", a keeper of a customs post that links parallel versions of Earth, and he gains powers within the walls of his tower. But the job comes with masters whose aims he does not understand, and Kirill soon has to decide whether to obey or resist them. Based on Sergey Lukyanenko's science-fiction novel Chernovik ("rough draft"), the film combines fantasy worlds, effects-driven action and a mystery about who is pulling the strings.
