Years ago a group of Indian army officers were court-martialled after an operation at a border post called China Gate went badly wrong, and they have lived with the shame ever since. Now old, broke and scattered, they are tracked down by Sandhya, a young woman whose village is being terrorised by the bandit Jageera, who also has a personal link to their past. Reluctant at first, the veterans travel to the village, train the frightened locals and prepare for a final stand. Rajkumar Santoshi's ensemble film openly draws on Seven Samurai and its Western retellings, gathering a rare line-up of senior character actors in leading roles. Mukesh Tiwari made his screen debut as Jageera, a role that made him instantly recognisable, and Urmila Matondkar's song Chamma Chamma became one of the biggest dance hits of 1998.
