Chiranjeevi plays a man whose wife's rich family never accepted their marriage. After her death his young son is taken away to Calcutta, and he follows to bring the boy back. In the vast, crowded city he has almost nothing to go on, and the search brings him help from an unexpected quarter, in the shape of Soundarya's character, and trouble from a ruthless, volatile gangster played by Prakash Raj, whose interests are tangled up with the boy's family. The story mixes a father's desperation with romance, family emotion and big action set pieces. Choodalani Vundi ("I want to see you") was a major hit, helped by Mani Sharma's popular songs and its extensive use of Kolkata locations, and it was remade in Hindi as Calcutta Mail (2003) with Anil Kapoor.
