Ravi is a prosperous executive with a loving wife and a young daughter. One morning a polite stranger slides into the back seat of his car and tells him that their child is being held, and that if Ravi and his wife want her back, they must do exactly as he says for the rest of the day. As the tasks become stranger and more humiliating, and the couple's own secrets begin to surface, they try to work out who this man is and what he really wants. Cocktail was the debut of editor-turned-director Arun Kumar Aravind and is an official adaptation of the Hollywood thriller Butterfly on a Wheel. Jayasurya, then known mostly for comic roles, won praise as the unnerving stranger.
