Hong Kong, shortly before the 1997 handover. Inspector Ma Jun is a cop whose fists get him results and complaints in equal measure. His friend Wilson has spent months undercover inside a gang run by three brutal brothers, and when Wilson's cover is blown and witnesses start disappearing, Ma takes the case personally. Director Wilson Yip and star Donnie Yen, who also designed the action, set out to make a gritty crime film whose fights mix boxing, grappling and kicks in a style drawn from mixed martial arts, then little seen in Hong Kong cinema. The climactic fight between Donnie Yen and Collin Chou is often ranked among the best of the decade, and the film won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Action Choreography.
