Vyjayanthi is a young, fearless police officer who refuses to bend to anyone. Posted to a city where crime and politics are tightly linked, she goes after racketeers and their powerful protectors, and the more she uncovers, the more personal the fight becomes. Karthavyam ("duty") was a landmark in Telugu cinema: a big commercial action hit carried by a woman rather than a male star. Vijayashanti won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the role, and the film fixed her image as an action heroine for the rest of the decade. It was also the first production of A. M. Rathnam, who went on to back major Tamil and Telugu films. It was remade in Hindi as Tejasvini (1994), again starring Vijayashanti.
