Holmes has retired from detective work, but when a cipher warns of danger to a man named John Douglas and Douglas is found shot at his moated manor of Birlstone, the great detective returns to the hunt. The trail leads back to a violent gang of Pennsylvania coal miners, the Scowrers, and to the man behind them, Professor Moriarty. This British film is a faithful adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's last Holmes novel, The Valley of Fear, including its long American flashback. It is the fourth of Arthur Wontner's five appearances as a dry, thoughtful Holmes, a portrayal many admirers rank among the best of the 1930s, with Ian Fleming as Watson and Lyn Harding as a commanding Moriarty.
