A month after the communal violence of 2002, life in an Ahmedabad that has not recovered goes on. An old Muslim musician refuses to accept that the city he loves has changed; a middle-class Hindu housewife is haunted by her failure to help a woman during the riots; a Muslim couple wonder whether their mixed marriage still protects them; a young boy who lost his family wanders through the city; and angry young men plan their own retaliation. Interweaving these stories over a single day, Firaaq shows how violence lingers long after the headlines move on. It was actress Nandita Das's directorial debut, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and brought together a strong ensemble including an early role for Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
