Demonte Colony in Chennai is the subject of local legend: a crumbling colonial mansion where, people say, the spirit of its former owner still lingers. Four young friends, short of money and full of bravado after a night of drinking, sneak inside on a dare. They escape, laughing, but strange things begin to happen in the small room they share, and it becomes clear that their trip has awakened something. Demonte Colony was the debut of director Ajay Gnanamuthu, who later made Imaikkaa Nodigal, and it became a sleeper hit thanks to its claustrophobic setting, sound design and unsentimental ending. A sequel, Demonte Colony 2, followed in 2024.
