Rod Slater runs one of the deepest gold mines in South Africa. A secret London syndicate, with an ally inside the mining company, plans to break through into an underground lake and flood the mine on purpose, so that the price of gold soars and they make a fortune. Slater, unaware that he is being used, is promoted into the middle of the scheme, while he falls for Terry, the wife of the man pulling the strings. Based on Wilbur Smith's novel Gold Mine, the film was directed by Peter R. Hunt, who had made On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and stars Roger Moore between his early Bond films. Its underground scenes were shot in real South African mines, and Elmer Bernstein's theme song Wherever Love Takes Me earned an Oscar nomination.
