Raje Bauji lives in a crowded, noisy joint family in a narrow lane of Old Delhi, with his wife, his younger brother's family and a daughter in love with a boy the family disapproves of. After one small incident shows him how easily people swallow hearsay, he makes a vow: from now on he will accept nothing as true unless he has experienced it himself. The vow costs him his job, puzzles his family and slowly turns him into a neighbourhood philosopher with a band of followers. Rajat Kapoor's gentle, funny and quietly profound film is carried by Sanjay Mishra in the performance of his career, which earned him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. Seema Pahwa is equally good as his long-suffering wife, and the film's real Old Delhi locations give it an unhurried, lived-in warmth.
