Annamalai sells milk for a living and his closest friend since childhood is Ashok, the son of a wealthy hotelier. Their bond is unshakable until Ashok's scheming father and a crooked politician poison it, and Annamalai's family home is destroyed to make way for a hotel. Humiliated, Annamalai challenges his former friend that he will become richer than him, and sets out from nothing to build an empire, never quite letting go of the friendship. Directed by Suresh Krissna and produced by K. Balachander's Kavithalayaa, the film is loosely based on the Hindi film Khudgarz (1987). It was a huge success that sealed Rajinikanth's image as the Superstar, with his introduction song and his famous challenge scene among the most celebrated moments in Tamil cinema. Deva composed the music.
