Devadasu, son of a wealthy landlord, and Parvathi, the daughter of a modest neighbour, have loved each other since childhood. When she dares to ask for marriage, his proud father refuses, and Devadasu, too weak to defy him, lets her go. Parvathi is married to an older, widowed zamindar, and Devadasu, broken by the loss, sinks into drink, finding a kind of comfort with Chandramukhi, a courtesan who comes to love him. Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Bengali novel, this Telugu version is among the most celebrated, and Akkineni Nageswara Rao's haunted performance became the defining role of his career, with Savitri luminous as Parvathi. The music by C. R. Subburaman, who died during production, includes the immortal "Jagame Maaya", sung by Ghantasala. The film was made simultaneously in Tamil.
