In the 1940s, in the temple town of Kanchipuram, Vengadam spends his life weaving luxurious silk saris that he and his family can never hope to wear. On the day his daughter is born, he promises that she will be married in silk. As the years pass and India moves toward independence, Vengadam is drawn into the workers' movement against the mill owners, while secretly, thread by thread, trying to keep his vow. The story unfolds in flashbacks as he is escorted home under police guard on a rainy journey. Priyadarshan, best known in Hindi for comedies, made this austere, deeply moving Tamil drama with almost no songs, and it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film, and Prakash Raj won the National Award for Best Actor.
