Deepak, a former police inspector, now lives quietly after an injury that ended his career. When a young man who wants to join the force visits him, Deepak tells him about the case that haunted him: one rainy night in Coimbatore that produced a body, a missing girl, a hit-and-run and a set of suspects whose stories never quite fitted together. As he narrates, the film reconstructs the investigation piece by piece, inviting the audience to solve the puzzle along with him. Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru ("sixteen poles", shortened to D16) was the debut of Karthick Naren, who made it when he was about 21, on a small budget and without songs. Its tight script and Rahman's restrained performance made it a surprise hit and a cult favourite among thriller fans.
