Liu Jinxi lives quietly in a mountain village in southwest China with his wife and children, working in the local paper mill. When two armed bandits rampage through the village store, Liu kills them in a clumsy-looking struggle and is hailed a hero. Detective Xu Baijiu, a man who trusts only science and evidence, studies the bodies and becomes convinced that Liu is a trained martial artist hiding his past. As Xu digs, the truth he uncovers puts the whole family in danger. Peter Chan's film, released in Chinese as Wu Xia, was a fresh take on the martial-arts genre, replaying fights in forensic close-up to show what really happened. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, and features kung fu legend Jimmy Wang Yu in his last major role.
