Dulhan Ek Raat Ki (1967)

Nutan plays a village girl from a poor family who goes to work for a wealthy household that claims kinship with hers. There she is exploited by a privileged man, played by Rehman, and the consequences stay with her long after she leaves. Later she meets and falls in love with a good-hearted man, played by Dharmendra, but the secret of her past weighs on their marriage. The film, directed by D. D. Kashyap, is an Indian adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles, carried by one of Nutan's deeply felt performances. Madan Mohan's score is the film's lasting legacy, including Mohammed Rafi's 'Ek Haseen Shaam Ko' and Lata Mangeshkar's 'Maine Rang Li Aaj Chunariya'.
