Ketki marries Vinay and comes to live in a village in Bihar where power lies with a corrupt contractor, Tirpat Singh, and where women are expected to stay silent. When Vinay is drawn into the contractor's schemes and his fortunes collapse, the marriage turns bitter, but Ketki refuses to accept humiliation from her husband or from anyone else. Her friendship with Chandravati, a strong-willed woman married to Ram Baran, a low-caste man who has risen by standing up to the old order, gives both women the courage to fight back. Prakash Jha, known for his films on politics and power in Bihar, made this as a story of women's resistance. Madhuri Dixit, at the peak of her stardom, chose a de-glamorised role here, and her performance with Shabana Azmi and Om Puri drew strong praise.
