Uday Shankar runs a shabby theatre company that keeps staging Mughal-e-Azam, with himself as Akbar and his glamorous wife Shabnam as Anarkali, to dwindling audiences. When Arjun, an intelligence officer, joins their circle in disguise to get close to a dangerous gang, his mission collides with the troupe's money troubles, Uday's jealousy and Shabnam's charms. The result is a farce of mistaken motives that builds to a chaotic performance of the famous play. Sanjay Chhel's comedy has Paresh Rawal in full comic flow, Rahul Bose in a rare lead in a mainstream comedy and Mallika Sherawat at the height of her fame, with Kay Kay Menon as the villain. It plays with affectionate references to K. Asif's 1960 classic.
