Meena Kumari plays a devoted sister-in-law who brings up her husband's orphaned younger brother with a mother's love, and Balraj Sahni plays her husband. When the boy grows up and marries, his new wife resents the older woman's place in the household, and the family's peace begins to crack. Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan ("sister-in-law's bangles") is a Hindi remake of the Marathi film Vahinichya Bangdya (1953). Its music was composed by Sudhir Phadke, one of the great names of Marathi music, and Lata Mangeshkar's dawn hymn Jyoti kalash chhalke, written by Pandit Narendra Sharma, is still among the most loved devotional songs in Hindi film.
