Eeshwar is a gentle, childlike man who lives with his grandmother and is treated as a fool by the people around him. He comes to know Lalita, a young widow with a small son who is suffering at the hands of a cruel society, and in his innocent way decides to marry her. The marriage scandalises the village, but Eeshwar's goodness gradually changes the lives of those around him. K. Viswanath remade his own Telugu classic Swathi Muthyam (1986), which had starred Kamal Haasan, and Anil Kapoor took on the role in a performance very different from his usual energetic heroes. Vijayashanti, a major star in Telugu cinema, plays Lalita.
