Raju is the cheerful, quick-witted leader of the porters at a railway station, and his clash with a wealthy, arrogant young woman soon turns into a battle of pride between their two worlds, with romance never far away. Venkatesh, one of the big Telugu stars of the period, leads with comic swagger, and director K. Raghavendra Rao, famous for his glossy song picturisations, gives the film his usual colourful touch. Ilaiyaraaja composed the music. Coolie No. 1 marked Tabu's debut as a leading lady, before she became a major star in Hindi cinema. It is unrelated to the Hindi Coolie No. 1 of 1995.
