Girdhar is the son of a great Kathak master who has vowed to keep his family's dance tradition pure. Training for a major competition, Girdhar takes on Neela as his partner and pupil, and the two fall in love, a love his father sees as a threat to the discipline of the art. The demands of devotion to dance put their bond to the test. Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje is a celebration of Indian classical dance by V. Shantaram, starring the Kathak dancer Gopi Krishna. One of the first Indian films in Technicolor, it won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and the Filmfare awards for Best Film and Best Director, and Vasant Desai's score is a classical treasure.
