Description

Hildy Johnson is the best crime reporter in Chicago, and he has finally had enough: he is leaving the paper to marry Peggy and start a respectable life. On his last day, an anarchist awaiting execution escapes from the county jail and practically drops into Hildy's lap, and his ruthless editor Walter Burns will use every trick he knows to keep Hildy on the story. The film is a fast-talking newsroom farce, the third screen version of the celebrated 1928 stage play by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. It was Billy Wilder's third pairing of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau after The Fortune Cookie, and features an early role for Susan Sarandon and a fine comic turn by Carol Burnett.
