In Southall, London, Gurtej Singh Kahlon rules his large family from the house they call Patiala House. Scarred by racist violence he suffered when he came to Britain, he has forbidden his son Gattu from playing cricket for England, the country that never accepted him. Gattu, once a gifted fast bowler, has spent years running the family shop instead. When an unexpected call-up arrives, he must play in secret while keeping the peace at home, encouraged by Simran, a neighbour with a spirit of her own. Patiala House combines sports drama with a family story about the immigrant experience and the generation gap. Akshay Kumar plays against his comic image, Rishi Kapoor is commanding as the father, and real international cricketers appear in the match scenes. Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy's songs, including Laung Da Lashkara, were popular.
