Ramesh and his wife Ganga move into an old palace that the locals say is haunted by Nagavalli, a dancer who died there long ago. Strange things soon begin to happen, and the family turns to sorcerers and rituals, until Ramesh's close friend Vijay, a psychiatrist, arrives and approaches the mystery with a scientist's eye. Apthamitra ("close friend") is P. Vasu's Kannada remake of the Malayalam classic Manichitrathazhu. It became one of the biggest Kannada hits of its time, and Vasu then remade it in Tamil as Chandramukhi with Rajinikanth; the Hindi Bhool Bhulaiyaa also comes from the same source. Soundarya's performance as Ganga is especially admired, and it was one of her last films. Gurukiran's songs were hugely popular.
