Priya is a bright, much-loved college student in a close family. She falls for the charming playboy Rahul and believes he loves her too, but when she becomes pregnant he walks away. Pressured to end the pregnancy and hide the scandal, Priya instead decides to have the child, and faces gossip, rejection and humiliation in her own community. Her quiet friend Ajay, who has always cared for her, stands by her. Kya Kehna was a rare mainstream Hindi film to tackle unwed motherhood, and it became a box-office success. Director Kundan Shah, best known for the satire Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, handled the subject with warmth, and Preity Zinta's performance helped make her a star. Rajesh Roshan's songs include "Ae dil laaya hai bahaar".
